HOW ACCURATE ARE THE RESULTS?
Although we make every effort to minimize the
variables and provide accurate results, keep in
mind these are REAL-WORLD tests. Our volunteers
do not live in a laboratory. They have real
lives and are affected by numerous influences
inside and outside their body. When reviewing
our test results, please keep in mind the
following factors that can affect the results:
PLACEBO EFFECT: Most scientific
studies are conducted using the double-blind
method. We don’t. The double-blind method means
the volunteer testing the product and the person
giving the test don’t know if they are getting
the actual product or a placebo (i.e., sugar
pill). It is sometimes believed that if someone
thought they were taking the real deal, even
though they weren’t, this would trigger
something in their body that would cause the
desired effect. Well, that’s all fine in the
scientific world, but this is the real world. As
we have said before, we do not care about the
mechanism or science behind why a supplement is
supposed to work. All we care about are results.
If you take a supplement (all other variables
limited) and put on 5 lb. of lean muscle and
your bench press goes from ten reps to eighteen
reps, who cares if it was caused by the
supplement itself or the shinny label on the
outside of the bottle?
NUMBER OF TESTS: The more tests
you do on a particular supplement, the better
the conclusions you can make about that
supplement. We have not yet done a large number
of tests on each supplement. However, that
doesn’t mean the tests we have completed have no
value. How often do people choose a supplement
based on a recommendation from a friend or the
biased supplement sales person? We believe our
tests have much more value than that. Hang with
us. We continue to test products we have already
tested. Our numbers keep growing and growing.
WEIGHT: Your weight can be
affected by the food and water you have recently
consumed and where you are in your excretory
cycle. A women’s weight can also be affected by
her menstrual cycle. These factors will not only
affect the reading on the scale, it will also
affect the calculations of body fat and lean
body mass.
CALIPERS: We are currently
using digital body fat calipers to measure body
fat. Calipers are not exact. You could test
someone three times in a row and get a slightly
different reading each time. We do the caliper
test two to four times and take an average
reading.
CHANGES IN DIET AND WORKOUT:
Although we have our volunteers sign contracts
saying that they will not significantly alter
their diet and workout during the test cycle,
small changes can affect the results. Your diet
and workout can be affected by injury, sickness,
mood, and an infinite number of outside
influences. If we feel a volunteer has made
significant changes in their diet or workouts,
we do not include his/her results in our posted
data.
DISHONESTY: It’s always
possible that our volunteers lie to us about
their qualifications and whether they have
followed the rules of the test. We have a good
rapport with our volunteers and believe they are
basically honest. However, the possibility of
dishonesty exists.
UNDERSTANDING THE TEST RESULTS CHARTS
WEIGHT CHANGE (lbs): This
column reflects the change in weight in pounds.
For example, if the chart shows “2”, this means
the volunteer had gained 2 pounds by the end of
the test period. If the chart showed “-2”, this
means that the volunteer lost 2 pounds. When
reviewing fat reducing supplements, you
obviously want to look for the largest negative
numbers.
WAIST CHANGE (inches): This
column reflects the change in waist
circumference in inches. For example, if the
chart shows “2”, this means the volunteer had
gained 2 inches around his waist by the end of
the test period. If the chart showed “-2”, this
means that the volunteer lost 2 inches around
the waist. When reviewing fat reducing
supplements, you obviously want to look for the
largest negative numbers.
BICEP CHANGE (inches): This
column reflects the change in bicep/tricep
circumference in inches. For example, if the
chart shows “.5”, this means the volunteer had
gained .5 inch around his bicep by the end of
the test period. If the chart showed “-.5”, this
means that the volunteer lost .5 inch around the
bicep. When reviewing muscle & strength building
supplements, you obviously want to look for the
largest positive numbers.
BODY FAT CHANGE (%): This
column reflects the change in body fat
percentage. For example, if the chart shows “1”
or a “.5”, this means the volunteer had gained
1% body fat or .5% body fat, respectively, by
the end of the test period. If the chart showed
“-1” or a “-.5”, this means that the volunteer
lost 1% body fat or .5% body fat, respectively.
When reviewing the charts, you obviously want to
look for the largest negative numbers which
would indicate the largest fat loss.
LBM CHANGE (lbs): This column
reflects the change in lean body mass in pounds.
This is the amount one would weigh if all the
body fat was stripped off the body. If the chart
shows “2”, for example, this means the volunteer
had gained 2 pounds of lean body mass by the end
of the test period. If the chart showed “-2”,
this means that the volunteer lost 2 pounds.
When reviewing the muscle & strength building
supplements, you obviously want to look for the
largest positive numbers which would indicate
the largest increases in muscle mass.
# OF REPS CHANGE (%): This
column reflects the percent change in maximum
number of reps on the strength test. The
strength test done most often is the bench press
but can sometimes be the bicep curl test. If the
chart shows “20%”, this mean that the volunteer
increase his/her number of reps by 20 percent by
the end of the test period. For example, if the
volunteer could bench or curl a certain weight
10 times at the beginning, then was able to
bench or curl the same weight 12 times at the
end of the test, that is a 20% increase in reps.
When viewing the muscle & strength building
supplements, you want to look for the largest
positive number which would indicate the largest
increase in strength.
LENGTH OF TEST (days): This
column shows the number of days the volunteer
was on the supplement. You must consider this
when examining the results. It is possible that
the longer you are on a supplement, the better
your results are. It’s also possible you’re
going to get all the positive results out of a
supplement in the first two weeks and then no
improvements after that. Currently, we do not
test for how long a supplement continues to
provide benefits.
SIDE EFFECTS NOTES: This column
shows the side effects noted by the particular
volunteer while taking the supplement. Please
note that these are NOT proven side effects.
They are only comments from our volunteers. The
changes the volunteers felt in their body could
have been from something completely different
going on in their body and had nothing to do
with the supplement itself. For example, if a
volunteer noted the product caused diarrhea,
it’s possible that the volunteer didn’t know he
or she was lactose intolerant and was consuming
more dairy products at the time. It is best to
look for trends when examining side effects. If
four out of five volunteers mentioned the same
side effect, then there is a higher probably
that that the supplement actually caused the
noted side effect.
CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY HAVE EFFECTED THE
RESULTS: Although we make every effort
to minimize the variables in these tests, there
is no way you can completely eliminate them.
Remember, these are real-world tests. They are
not done in a controlled laboratory environment.
If a volunteer significantly changes their diet
or workout routine or strays too far from the
label’s instructions, we will not include their
results in our charts. This column is for
recording the volunteer’s own admitted variables
that he or she feels may have affected results.
Common examples include forgetting to take a
couple doses, missing a couple scheduled
workouts or there was a change in normal diet
for a short period
GENERAL COMMENTS: This column
shows any other comments the volunteer stated
about the supplement. Examples include taste,
how well the supplement mixed in liquid and
overall satisfaction. Keep in mind these are
only that specific volunteer’s opinion and does
not reflect the opinions of SupplementTests.com,
Inc.
